Continuous learning refers to lifelong learning at different stages of life and career. It is anticipated that in Finland, nearly half a million people will need retraining or further education in the coming years.
We offer adults flexible opportunities to enhance their skills, for example, through online courses or blended learning alongside work. The courses are open to everyone, regardless of whether you have vocational education, polytechnic studies, high school education, or university education. Both paid and free online courses are available.
The continuous learning services at the University of Vaasa also include science education for children and young people (LUMA Centre Ostrobothnia) and support for immigrants in accessing higher education and employment corresponding to their qualifications (SIMHE, Supporting Immigrants in Higher Education).
Open university provides university-level education for all Finnish citizens and residents, regardless of educational background or age. Teaching is aimed to be arranged during evenings and weekends so that as many students as possible are able to participate.
University of Vaasa belongs to the FITech network that offers university courses free of charge for adult learners in Finland. The themes include e.g. ICT, energy storage, hydrogen economy and 5G studies – develop the skills needed in future work life!
With separate study right, you can attend courses that are targeted to our degree students. You can apply for a separate study right for the courses on offer, for individual courses or for a broader set of courses, up to a maximum of 35 credits at a time. Classes are usually held during the day on weekdays. Number of seats for each course is limited and the studies are subject to a tuition fee. During the academic year, there are two application periods for separate study rights.
Would you like to supplement your degree? If you graduated with a master’s degree on or after 1 August 2019 you can apply for alumni study right. Alumni studies are free of charge during the academic year following graduation. To be eligible you need to register as an University of Vaasa alumni.

Interest in science and technology begins in childhood. The LUMA Centre of Ostrobothnia at the University of Vaasa promotes the teaching and learning of natural sciences, mathematics, and technology among children and young people. The centre supports teachers by providing them with training and fun, modern tools for teaching. Additionally, various science clubs and leisure-time science education activities are organised for children, young people, and families.
