Julia Richardson, professor in the School of Management and Marketing at Curtin University will talk about “Non-sustainable careers: getting by with a little help from our friends”
The idea of career sustainability, what it is and how it can be supported and achieved has been the focus of much interest. An underlying assumption of this interest is that with the ‘right’ support systems and individual agency all careers can and should be sustainable. In her presentation, Professor Richardson will challenge this assumption exploring inherently non-sustainable careers, how they are experienced, their challenges and rewards and the criticality of diverse social support networks. Drawing on an international study of elite athletes in high contact sports she will also suggest that while non-sustainable careers may present significant challenges, they can also be highly rewarding and, if managed appropriately, can operate as an important foundation for careers in other fields. A key concern, however, is that individuals pursuing such non-sustainable careers have access to appropriate support systems to ensure effective and positive transitions to subsequent careers. Professor Richardson will draw on Bakker and Demerouti’s Job-Demands-Resources model to explain her findings alongside Granovetter’s seminal work on the ‘Strength of Weak Ties’. She will also suggest areas for future research on non-sustainable careers.
Professor Michael Dickmann, the distinguished Senior Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Human Resource Management. In his presentation, "How to succeed in Publishing – case of International Journal of Human Resource Management (IJHRM)" Professor Dickmann will elucidate the intricacies of the publishing process, drawing from his extensive experience in the realm of academic journals. This seminar promises to be an enriching opportunity for researchers refine their understanding of journal publishing.
