– The purpose of this research is to make the grid more resilient so that smart grid operation can be adopted with the increased reliability, says Shafiq.
His research is focused on development of efficient condition monitoring system for network components in order to detect and locate the electrical insulation faults in the electrical components.
– I will be developing more efficient sensors and monitoring system and improved techniques of detection and location. A new integrated monitoring system will detect several different insulation fault locations in the network simultaneously, says Shafiq.
Successful implementation of the project will introduce the concept of automated monitoring of incipient faults which enables maximizing the in-service life of the components.
– The industrial companies have a growing interest in condition monitoring, says professor in Electrical Engineering, Kimmo Kauhaniemi from the University of Vaasa’s Faculty of Technology.
Dr Shafiq has previously worked for Vensum Ltd, Hifab Oy and Aalto University, where he also did his PhD in Electrical Engineering in 2014. The title of his dissertation was “Design and Implementation of Partial Disharge Measurement Sensors for On-line Condition Assessment of Power Distribution System Components”. Dr Shafiq has also worked seven years as a lecturer and assistant professor at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB) in Pakistan.
The aim of the Academy of Finland’s funding for research posts as Postdoctoral Researcher is to advance the professional competence of the most promising researchers who have recently completed their doctoral degree. Postdoctoral Researchers are encouraged to international mobility and collaboration as well as to national and cross-sectoral mobility.
– I will make two longer stays as a visiting fellow to Carlos III University of Madrid and University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, says Shafiq.
