Matti Mehtälä, who studied the use of artificial intelligence in the buyer-supplier relationship at different stages of procurement, has been awarded the best master's thesis 2023 in the Strategic Business Development (SBD) master's programme at the University of Vaasa.

Mehtälä chose the topic because of its topicality. He works with procurement at UPM-Kymmene Oyj.

– AI is on the surface in many ways, but there are also many questions and uncertainties. I wanted to tackle a subject that is topical but about which I knew little.

The thesis used a variety of perspectives by interviewing the buying and supply sides of procurement. The work highlighted the potential of AI in areas such as contract document management, process automation and purchasing optimisation.

–  The thesis used a wide range of data and explored both internal and external perspectives, which provided new insights into how AI can be used in different procurement processes. The work was particularly comprehensive, says Tuomas Huikkola, Associate Professor at the School of Management, who acted as the second reviewer.

In the future, Mehtälä plans to delve even deeper into the subject, as he started his doctoral studies a few weeks ago.
