Rector Jari Kuusisto promised in his speech at the opening ceremony of the academic year that the University of Vaasa's research, teaching, campus development and other activities will increasingly promote sustainability.
"UN sustainable development goals provide an important strategic direction for the university. We invite each one of you to work together towards sustainable development", he said.
Rector Kuusisto also told about the renewal process of the university.
"University of Vaasa makes significant investments in research. At the moment we have 21 tenure track and professor positions that have just been filled or are in the process to be filled. Together with the existing faculty, these researchers play a key role in the success of the university", Kuusisto described.
Part of the renewal will be the comprehensive renovation of the University of Vaasa campus.
"It is estimated that the project will take some three years time to complete. Our target is to create a world-class research and learning environment for us all. We will invite students, staff and stake-holders to participate planning of campus in several ad hoc groups", Kuusisto promised.
According to Kuusisto, international education and research have an increasingly important role in the university's strategy and daily work.
"We are keen to develop international partnerships with several countries including China, EU and the USA", he said.
