New students start their studies at the Palosaari campus at the end of August with orientation days. First, students will meet their tutors and learn about the university, their field of study and how to start their academic studies. The actual teaching starts at the beginning of September.

– We warmly welcome new students to the University of Vaasa’s active and international community, says Vice Rector Tanja Risikko.

– We have studies in Vaasa, Seinäjoki, Kokkola and Pori. Our number of applicants and students increased a lot from last year. Studies at the University of Vaasa prepares students for the future, and our cooperation with companies is close.

Seidi Koivulahti is starting her studies in the field of communications and she is looking forward to the autumn. The dream of studying at university has been in her mind for a long time. Now it’s time to fulfil those dreams, as she says.

– I've heard a lot of good things from people I know who are studying at the University of Vaasa. Vaasa is the perfect location. I expect my studies to give me the professional skills and courage to become an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship has been one of my dreams since childhood. However, let’s see where life takes me. I don't want to be too goal-oriented, I want to look around and see what life and studies will bring.

Krishna Kandel, who is starting his studies in the master’s programme in Finance, has arrived in Vaasa from Nepal.

– I chose the University of Vaasa because of the international environment and strong expertise in business studies, especially in finance. I hope that during my studies I will be able to deepen my knowledge of finance and grow my networks. In the future, I would like to work in investment banking or financial analysis.

The University of Vaasa was a favourite among applicants

In the spring’s second joint call for applications, 7302 applicants applied for the University of Vaasa's bachelor degree programmes, of which more than 800 were accepted as students.

70% of the places in the bachelor's programmes were reserved for first-time applicants. The University of Vaasa offers bachelor's programmes in business and economics, technology, administrative sciences, and communications. In line with the reform of university admissions, a large proportion of students were selected on the basis of their matriculation certificate, while the remaining places were filled on the basis of entrance exams.

A total of 2074 applicants applied for master's programmes in Finnish, of which 250 new students were accepted. Around 460 new students will start this autumn in the international master's programmes. This year, 16 134 applications were received.

Multiple routes to university

You can apply to all academic units of the University of Vaasa without an entrance exam, also through open university. At the same time as the joint application round, there was also an application based on open university studies. This year, a total of 72 applicants were selected as a degree student through the open university.

The University of Vaasa continues to develop alternative pathways to university. For those who do not have a place at university, the open university offers many opportunities.

The University and the Student Union work closely together to welcome new students. Tutors act as a link between new students and the university community. They introduce new students to the university, the city and help them get started with their student life in Vaasa.
