Grid Code certification by Simulation (GCCS)

Business Finland logo

In this project the main aim is to develop new kinds of certification processes to verify the grid code compliance of the power plants. Instead of relying solely on hardware (HW) testing, we propose a simulation-based certification approach. By doing so, we aim to significantly reduce the time and resources currently expended during full power-based compliance certification tests supervised by independent testing bodies in the factory or during on-site commissioning at power plant sites.

In this project Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) based testing methods are developed and demonstrated. This approach will utilize external hardware, such as grid inverter controller, connected to a simulation model of a grid running is the real time simulator. Additionally, we will define a model library for grid code testing specifically tailored for simulation-based grid code verification. This library will include essential simulation models, device interface specifications, and standardized testing procedures. At the end the methodology is demonstrated and tested at the FREESI laboratory.
